Using Smartphones at school - does that seem to be a good idea? You bet! Mobiles are not only favored by students all around the world but high-performance minicomputer that can be used for numerous exciting experiments at STEM-classes. How that works is shown by the new iStage2-brochure that is to be published by Science on Stage Germany.
Since October 2013 20 teachers from 14 Eruopean countries worked out eleven interesting teaching units that show how to integrate Smartphones at maths, physics, chemistry and biology classes. From the measuring of the universe to an examination of daily noise nuisance to speed measurement of cars: The trouser-pocket technology of Smartphones offers students and teachers alike many chances on inquiry-based learing. Topics are natural scientific questions that can be solved via several functions of the Smartphone: Various apps, camera-features and audio-recording provide for the students many possibilties to investigate different tasks in maths, physics, chemistry and biology.

"Teaching Science in Europe" is a European exchange process that was initiated by Science on Stage Germany (SonSD) in 2004. In November 2013 results from “Teaching Science in Europe 4 – iStage” were presented, where 25 teachers from 15 countries developed teaching materials for ICT in science lessons. One of the main objectives was to encourage teachers to program. A main focus lied on the process of the project – international teamwork of teachers over a longer period of time.
Within the project further teachers joint the work and the participants were interested in continuing the work. At the Science on Stage festival 2013 a first brainstorming in “Smartphones in Science Teaching” took place..
