Naturalis Historia: Historische Experimente in Chemie und Biologie auf Basis lateinischer Texte

Naturalis Historia: Historische Experimente in Chemie und Biologie auf Basis lateinischer Texte

2011 is the International Year of Chemistry and this work aims at celebrating this science, highlighting its interdisciplinary cultural and educational value. The project moves through some doubts and statements of Pliny the Elder and is subdivided into lessons. Each lesson begins with a selected passage of the “Naturalis Historia”, the context from which the learning process starts. Step by step, as a consequence of an interplay of teacher and students, a tree structure set of demonstrations takes shape and its purpose is to build a concept map whose target consists in reaching the first year chemistry course goals. The passage from “Naturalis Historia” is talked over in the classroom and then one moves on, readapting in the lab, either the same natural event the author refers to, or something similar. All along this way, where Pliny takes them by the hand, students happen to be in the same pre-scientific condition the author is, and that results in a strong motivation; for example making Telinum, the perfume of Julius Caesar, is an advisable way to get the laziest student to be curious of the separation methods.
