Thomas Gerl teaches biology and chemistry at the Ludwig-Thoma-Gymnasium (LTG) in Prien am Chiemsee. He served his apprenticeship at the University of  Bayreuth. What the enthusiastic biologist appreciates the most about being a teacher is the opportunity to give his students an understanding of his own fascination for the environment. The exchange with like-minded teachers is of great importance to him: In 2015 he got awarded with the Deutscher Lehrerpreis for the interdisciplinary school project ‚Mission to Mars‘ together with some colleagues from the LTG. In 2014 he took part in the German Science on Stage festival in Berlin. Together with his colleague Johannes Almer he made it to the national delegation teachers team and went to the European Science on Stage festival in London. At last he campaigend for Science on Stage as speaker at teacher trainings. Also in 2017 he took part in the European festival in Debrecen, Hungary. Since 2016 he represents Science on Stage Germany as 'ambassador' in Oberbayern, Bavaria, and since 2018 he is also a member of the BackStageTeam. Since 2017 Thomas Gerl is also expert advisor for chemistry at the Bavarian Kultusministerium.

What does being a teacher mean to you?

For me, being a teaching means to have the great opportunity to reach out at many young people and get them inspired for biology and chemistry. As a teacher I also have the freedom to put in shape my own ideas. Also: Working at a group of teachers with different personalities at a common project allows each team member to bring his strength for the benefit of the school and the students.
