Length of a Day: Calculating the day by means of the altitude of the sun, ecliptic and rotation of the earth (iStage 1)

Die Länge des Tages: Berechnungen mithilfe von Sonnenstand, Ekliptik und Erdrotation (iStage 1)

In this teaching unit students measure or calculate the time of sunrise and sunset on a given day as well as the length of that day, and design the graphical representation of the heights of the sun on the horizon throughout the day. Students can also keep tabs with the data obtained for one day, then repeat the calculations for another day and compare the two.

Students of this unit should be between 15 and 18 years old as prior knowledge of trigonometry and astronomy is needed.

The teachers use a Java-program to calculate the lenght of a day. (Link see additional material below). The project is taken from the brochure “iStage - ICT in natural science teaching” in the section “Our Environment”. You can download the complete brochure here (printed version no longer available). The material has been developed by 22 teachers from 15 countries. The project has been supported by SAP.
