Lantern Moon: Researching stars in primary school with astronomer Nadya Ben Bekhti

Laternenmond: Astronomie in der Grundschule mit der Sternenforscherin Nadya Ben Bekhti entdecken

Already as a 4-year-old Nadya Ben Bekthi knew that later in her life she wanted to investigate the stars. Her career aspiration tended towards being an astronaut at first, but after visiting a Planetarium she decided to become an astronomer. Today the trained physicist researches galaxies using the largest telescopes in the world that are as big as a football pitch. In ‘Lantern Moon and Hot Ears’ she demonstrates among other things how to bring the starlit sky and the surface of the moon into the classroom using household items.

The teaching brochure ‘Lantern Moon and Hot Ears’ was created by an international working group following the Science on Stage festival 2011 in Copenhagen. The new edition with simplified texts contains templates which can be copied to promote language skills with natural sciences. Scientists explain in them, how they came to their chosen profession and the sometimes odd stories that happened to them along the way. The collection contains assignments to promote language skills for students with various experiments. Primary school teachers working with these assignments do not need to have specialized scientific knowledge. The brochure can be downloaded here.
