Smart Astronomers: Using smartphones for parallax measurements in the universe (iStage 2)

Clevere Astronomen: Parallaxenmessungen im Weltall mit dem Smartphone (iStage 2)

The distances of planets, stars, galaxies and other objects seem unreal to most students. But using parallax measurements even such great distances can be determinded. How this works shows the teaching unit ‘Smart Astronomers’ in which students use their smartphones to think themselves from the classroom to the sky.

For this teaching unit the students should be at an age between 14 and 18 years, for certain knowledge in physics, astronomy, mathematics, geometry and trigonometry is presumed.

The project is taken from the brochure ‘iStage 2: Smartphones in Science Teaching’ from the topic ‘eyes’. The complete brochure can be ordered free of charge (Mail at or downloaded. It was developed by 20 teachers from 14 countries around Europe. The project was proudly supported by SAP.
